Because it didn't seem to be necessary on the platforms I tested.

Sadly, it does seem that this was the correct decision. For what it's
worth, I think what we're seeing is not so much that netcdf is
problematic as that linking to a third party F90 library in a
compiler-neutral fashion is very difficult. (Not that this distinction
improves the situation any...)
