preliminary this is memory corruption of some sort: if I
call write(77+worldrank,*) mdout from multisander.f, it displays
correct file name; if called from sander, it prints some garbage;
to summarize -- the failure has *nothing* to do with ncsu-*.[fh];
I hope to nail it down today if nothing unexpected happens though
