Further to these remarks, it seems that the gnu compiler is affected by
this march problem, while the intel one is not. Not that this means it's
any less of a problem; but it explains why it flew under the radar for
me, since generally I'm using Intel at the moment. It could also be how
it escaped notice on certain other systems.
