I do agree that it is reasonable to install a newer gcc, especially if
there is a code reason why 4.4 is much preferable over 4.1. However, for
the sake of the discussion I will note that RedHat/CentOS 5.6 (which uses
gcc4.1) was released just 5 years ago, so my computers are not as horribly
out of date as one might think.
