I vote we drop support for 4.2.3 and below. Only RHEL5 has it anymore,
and as Hai here pointed out, gcc 4.4.4 is readily available as a separate
yum-install (although users have to hack the configure2 script to replace
gcc with gcc44, g++ with g++44, and gfortran with gfortran44).
On the other hand, GCC 4.4.4 was released in 2010 and is still the standard
compiler for RHEL 6, I believe (?). Probably not quite worth dropping
support for that yet.
