The old spiral-bound manuals were a huge help to me as a new PhD student.
Far away as we were from other AMBER users, in the wuthering north of
England, arrival of the manual for a new release was a big deal and as
important as the code itself.
I think that keeping it all in one volume is important for convenience, so
whatever format we go to should accommodate that.
